["A Summer of Powerful Peace" (#ASOPP) is the 90-day campaign to launch the game-changing new book, Powerful Peace; A Navy SEAL's Lessons on Peace from a Lifetime at War. Here's #20. Click at the top right to receive email notices for updates!]
A double honor for me with today’s #ASOPP update: First, I got permission to upload the photo of my “adoring fans” from the Houston Airport (see #ASOPP 11 of 90, “Rob’s Mob”). These young ladies are the top four cookie sellers in their area: three sold 4,000+ each, and one sold 6,000+ boxes! I don’t think I could sell that many cookies at gunpoint.
The other amazing thing is that with Council leadership, we were able to arrange an event at their SoCal camp for this Saturday morning, where I’ll get to dialogue with over a hundred scouts, counselors, parents and leaders on Powerful Peace.
My interest in sharing with girls and women goes far beyond the fact that I’m raising an amazing one and wed to an amazing one. Women are so strong, so resilient, and so gifted in ways men are not, that it overwhelms me to see pockets of increased opportunity popping up in a million ways and places around the world.
As you’ll read in Powerful Peace, women’s empowerment is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves as a species. Nick Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, husband-and-wife writing team, published an extremely important book entitled, Half the Sky; Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. Half the Sky is a collection of stories about women and girls around the world who have faced incredible challenges (inhuman enslavement, sexual brutality, crippling social constraint) and what they did with them. Titled after a proverb that “Women hold up half the sky,” this is a must-read for anyone interested in better understanding the human race.
I’ve included other female heroes of mine in the book, in hopes of giving more opportunities for my readers to see more of their work. Abby Disney has produced documentaries including Women, War and Peace. It will change you! The episodes are free to watch at this link…so watch them:
Women, War and Peace
Gayle Tzemach Lemmon is a vocal supporter of Powerful Peace and the author of works including The Dressmaker of Khair Khanna. She writes about “women, the economy, and entrepreneurship…and oftentimes all three.” I can’t think of a better way to express that the story of women and girls is the story of humanity. We do not have one without the other.
In short, I am deeply humbled and proud to know these powerful individuals, and I always learn from them…and I can’t wait to see what wonders these women of tomorrow will create!
